POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE &
MANAGEMENT

SCOPE: This programme provides a complete treatment
of Computer Software. It enables a student to understand
and use the power of Computers in Web Applications and
Database Applications.
This Diploma is awarded by St. Xavier’s Technical
Institute.
Students of this course are also eligible to register and
appear for the Advanced Diploma in Computer Software,
Systems Analysis & Applications, provided they meet with
the necessary requirements for eligibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: Any Degree recognised by the
Government (minimum 40%)
Admissions start in July.
DURATION: 1 year (Part-Time)
LECTURE TIMINGS: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 6.30 p.m. to
8.30 p.m.

Courses offered in Semester I:
Unit I:
Operating System & Utilities:
Computer Fundamentals, Binary and other number
systems, Operating Systems (Windows 98 and LINUX),
Word Processing using MS-Word, Spreadsheets using
MS-Excel.
Computer Hardware:
Various Computer configurations and parts, different
types of Processors, Device Drivers, Monitors, Storage
Devices (HDD’s, FDD’s, CD-ROM’s), RAM sizes, Overview of
Multimedia.
Networking:
Networking Overview, The Networking Environment,
Network Topologies, Network Connectivity, Introduction to
Netware, Introduction to Novell directory Services,
Logging in and Accessing Resources, Network Printing.
Internet:
Installation of Modem, Installation of Driver
Software, Getting connected to the ISP, Username and
Password, TCP/IP Account, Browser software, Facilities
offered by the Internet, viz. E-Mail, Chat, ICQ, Network
Games etc.
*On completion of Operating Systems and Utilities (Unit I)
the students will get a Novell Education Certificate
in
a) Introduction to PC Hardware &
O.S.
b) Introduction to Networking
This also includes two books provided by Novell for the
above courses.
Unit II:
Object Oriented Programming with Java:
Problem solving and representation of solutions using
Flowcharts and Pseudocodes, Introduction to Object
Oriented Programming (OOP) paradigm, Classes and Objects,
Constructors and Destructors, Operator Overloading,
Function Overloading, Inheritance, Virtual Classes /
Functions, Polymorphism, Creating Web Pages, Introduction
to Java Applets, Developing Java Applications, Methods,
Arrays, Strings And Characters, Graphics, Exception
Handling, Multithreading, Multimedia – Images, Animation
and Audio, Files and Streams, Networking, Data Structures.
Unit III:
GUI Programming With Visual Basic.NET:
Visual Studio.Net IDE, Overview of VB.NET, Common
Language Runtime, Variables and Types, Namespaces, Windows
Forms, Error Handling, Creating Windows Controls, Working
with COM and Interfaces, COMponent services, Data Access
with ADO.Net, Designing Reports with Crystal Reports,
Developing Internet Applications.
Unit IV:
Analysis and Design of Information Systems:
Information and Management, Information Systems
Analysis Overview, Information Gathering, System
Requirements Specification, Feasibility Analysis, Data
Flow Diagrams, Process Specifications, Decision Tables,
Logical Database Design, Data Input Methods, Database
Management Systems (DBMS), Object Oriented System
Modelling, Designing Outputs, Control, Audit & Security of
Information Systems.
Unit V:
Mini-Project:
One project of 20 hours has to be completed by the
students using any of the above languages / packages
learned. The subject and language of the project should be
approved by the concerned authority.

Layers and DHTML Dropdown, Flyout and Tab Menus, Creating
an HTML Frames Based Interface, Creating a clickable DHTML
Tabbed Interface, Simulating Tree-View Navigation,
Fireworks & DHTML AniMagic, Putting a presentation into
Motion, Creating Simple and Disjoint Rollovers, Taking
Control with Templates & Library Objects.
Unit VIII:
Web Programming with ASP, ADO and XML:
Web Application and ASP, Introduction to VBScript and
JScript, Introduction to ASP applications, Building ASP
applications, State Maintenance in ASP application, ADO
for Web Developers, Client Side Scripting, Planning
Applications, Using XML / XSL language, XML and ASP,
E-Commerce.
Unit IX:
Project:
One project of 9 Weeks has to be completed by the
students using any of the above languages / packages
learned. The subject and language of the project should be
approved by the concerned authority.
Unlimited time for additional practicals on
computer is offered to students who wish to have more
time.
N.B. Besides the lectures, a student has to put in
4 hrs/week of compulsory computer time. There is also a
requirement of 20 hours of computer time on mini project
for computerisation.
Minimum marks for passing: 50% in each subject.
